Tourism, a lucrative sector that has made up large portions of countries’ GDP has become more competitive. The need to remain aggressive in this market has nudged governments and corporation alike to create attractive landmarks every few years. This need to boost tourism numbers has allowed visionaries to expand their ideas beyond the usual paradigm and increasingly, architects and industrial designers are looking to build underwater residences. Being surrounded by shoals of exotic fish and colourful corals, submerged residences bring about a new sense of novelty and uniqueness to the concept of submerged habitats. The rich and diverse marine life have undoubtedly intrigued many and more is being done to propel this movement forward.

However, being at the initial stages of its development there are potentially a host of various issues that need to be tackled before it is ready for wide spread use. From considering atmospheric pressure to ensuring that the aquatic ecosystem is not disrupted, more research and development are being conducted to test the feasibility of such an arrangement.

Being a hefty price to pay, inquries are being done actively to minimise losses and to estimate costs that may arise in future. This being said, with more investments and interest from corporations and individuals alike, it wont be long before the emergence of such underwater residences become a present reality. Visionaries across the world belive that this is a rising trend that will gain popularity as we face growing problems such as land scarcity. However, as the novelty wears off, more amenities have to be fitted along with these houses to ensure that the communities of underwater living remains robust and interconnected to land dwellings. This will enable it to gain even greater popularity and the feasibility of these options will undoubtedly improve.

Examples of this vision include the:

1) Undersea restaurant at the Conrad hotel on Rangali Island in the Maldives

2) Water Discus hotel, planned for Dubai.
3) Poseidon Undersea Resort, on Katafinga Island in Fiji.

4) H20me
